JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - Missouri House budget writers have chipped away some spending in the spending plan for next year, but not enough to cover a projected shortfall.
Missouri is facing an estimated gap of $200 million to $500 million in its budget for the 2011 fiscal year, which begins in July.
The House Budget Committee considered dozens of amendments Thursday to a proposed $23.8 billion operating budget.
But chairman Allen Icet estimates that less than $100 million was trimmed. He says more cuts will have to be made on the House floor or in the Senate.
The committee defeated an attempt to cut funding for public schools.
