Joplin, Mo. sailor to represent his home state on attack submarine "Missouri"

Electronics Technician 1st Class John Tyhurst will be aboard the submarine USS Missouri on July 31 when it is commissioned into the U.S. Navy fleet.

The Joplin, Missouri man enlisted in the Navy as a Submarine Navigation Electronics Technician.

The nuclear-powered attack submarine Missouri is the fifth Navy ship to be named in honor of the people of state.

At 377 feet long, the Missouri is slightly longer than a football field.
