Lions stay perfect with double-header sweep of Truman State

Updated:

JOPLIN -- The Missouri Southern baseball team came-from-behind in game one and utilized a stellar pitching performance in game two to sweep a double-header with Truman State today at Joe Becker Stadium.

The Lions (10-0, 3-0 MIAA) won game one by the score of 16-10 and game two 5-2. In game one, Southern went down 7-2 early on and trailed 8-3 after the top of the fifth, but the Lions exploded for seven runs in the fifth and six in the sixth to put the game away.

Michael McCoy went 2-2 with three RBIs and a run scored in the game, while Dane Kolkmeyer came off the bench and went 2-3 with four RBIs and a pair of runs scored. MJ Sartin and Thomas Wilson scored twice, while Sam Ryan drove in a pair of his own. Brett Abell started and went an inning and a third, but left with arm soreness. David Reese pitched the final 3.2 innings, striking out two and allowing just two hits for his first collegiate win.

In game two, the Lions saw another outstanding pitching performance from Ryan Wheat as the senior went the distance, striking out six and walking none, while allowing just two runs. Kolkmeyer had two hits and a run scored, while five other Lions had a hit each. Sartin and Kolkmeyer drove in a run each.

The Lions went on top early with two runs in the third when Luke Acosta scored on an error and Sartin drove home McCoy with a double. After Truman tied it up with two runs in the fourth, the Lions added the go-ahead run in the fourth on an RBI single from Kolkmeyer and then put the game away with two more in the sixth on a sac fly from Gerber and an RBI triple from Thomas Wilson.

The Lions will finish up the weekend series tomorrow with a single, nine-inning game at noon at Joe Becker.
