Gorillas Complete Four-Game Sweep of Bearcats

Updated:

PITTSBURG — The Pitt State baseball team completed a four-game series sweep of NW Missouri State Sunday (Apr. 22) with 7-5 and 5-4 victories at Al Ortolani Field.

The Gorillas (18-23, 14-18 MIAA) earned their first four-game sweep of a conference foe in four years with Sunday's wins over the Bearcats (14-28, 13-19 MIAA). Pitt State climbed into seventh place in the MIAA standings with the victories.

In game one, the Gorillas jumped out to leads of 2-0 and 3-1 before plating two runs for a 5-1 advantage in the fifth inning.

The Bearcats rallied to score three runs in the sixth to trim the margin to 5-4, but Pitt State tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the frame.

Jake Stevenson (4-4) allowed just two earned runs in 5 2/3 innings of work, while Cody Wren got the final four outs for his second save of the season.

Evan Thomas, Chase Barnes, Brad Foss and Luke Bordewick all collected two hits to lead the Gorillas' 11-hit attack.

In game two, Pitt State jumped out to a quick 2-0 first-inning lead and pitchers Jake Moore and George Brandecker combined to hold Northwest at bay.

Bordewick drove in a pair of runs, while Austin Lastimado also had an RBI hit in the contest.

Moore allowed just four hits and an unearned run in five innings of work. Brandecker (3-3) registered four strikeouts in four innings of relief work.
