LABETTE COUNTY, KAN. - Two people are dead after officials say they attempted to cross a creek that was flooding.
Authorities received a call of concern Tuesday at about 9:30 p.m. from the victim's friends saying they had not heard from them since Monday.
Sheriff William Blundell says the rescue team went straight for Pumpkin Creek after the victim's friends said they should have been in the area.
"By the time we were notified about it it was 24 hours and so at that point we were trying to locate where they were at," Sheriff Blundell says. "We had Parsons Fire Department bring out their boat out and they put it in the water, and with their equiptment we were able to locate where the vehicle was at and were able to get it out."
The water recovery was made around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday morning.
Tonya Demoss, 22, of Springfield, Missouri and Tyler Odaffer, 26, of Parsons were killed officials say when their small car was swept up by the swift-flowing creek.
The couple was driving just east of Mound Valley on 15,000 Road.
The car had drifted 200 feet south of the creek crossing and was submerged under nearly ten feet of water with both drowning victims inside.
Officials say don't drive if you do not have to. Some flooding doesn't look that bad but can be decieving.
