Chiefs seem to be regressing, not progressing

Associated Press - December 7, 2009 4:45 PM ET

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - It was back to work Monday for the Kansas City Chiefs, and back to the 1980s for long-suffering fans.

For the first time since 1983, the Chiefs have been gouged for 40 or more points in consecutive games. Sunday's 44-13 humiliation by the Denver Broncos, following a 43-14 pounding by San Diego, has erased all the optimism produced by back-to-back wins over Oakland and Pittsburgh.

Now the Chiefs (3-9) have four games left, or the final quarter of the year as coach Todd Haley likes to divide up the season. The next two are home against teams that are also struggling, Buffalo and Cleveland.

Kansas City then closes out its third straight miserable season at Cincinnati and Denver, both strong contenders.
