Defunct mining town gives over $500,000 to Oklahoma college

Updated:

MIAMI, OKLA. - A Four State college gets a big legacy from a town that has now ceased to exist.

The town of Picher, Oklahoma has given more than $500,000 to the Development Foundation at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College in Miami, Oklahoma.

In exchange the foundation will make sure documents and records from the city of Picher are preserved and available for research.

The endowment will also establish a scholarship, which Picher officials say is a natural fit for NEO.

"NEO has been here for 91 plus years," says Picher Mayor Tim Reeves.  "We figured they will be here forever.  A lot of kids from small communities don't like going off to a big college.  This will help them get in the college scene."

As part of the agreement NEO will also host Picher's annual all-school reunion, which drew 2,000 people last year.
