Lions drop series finale at Truman State, 5-4

Updated:
KIRKSVILLE, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern baseball team opened up an early 3-1 lead, but Truman scored five unanswered runs and that proved enough as the Lions fell to the Bulldogs, 5-4 today.

Southern (11-8, 7-7 MIAA) starter Bo Bergen went four and a third, allowing three earned and striking out one, while Cody Greibling threw two and two thirds of two-run ball to take the loss. Griebling moves his overall record to 3-1 this season. Grant Conrad threw a perfect eighth, striking out one.

Truman (4-12, 3-9 MIAA) starter Kyle Veazey threw a solid eight innings, allowing two earned runs, while striking out two and walking none to earn his first win of the year. Chris Allard threw a hitless ninth, striking out one and walking one to pick up his second save of the weekend.

The Lions started things off with two in the first on RBI singles from both CJ Matthews and Ben Millard. Southern added another run in the third on a sacrifice fly from Matthews, driving in Jesse Kinzey.

Truman scored five unanswered runs over the next five innings, and despite a late run from the Lions in the eighth (another sacrifice fly from Matthews scoring Kinzey), the Bulldogs held on for the win.

Matthews went 1-2 with three RBIs in the game, while Kinzey was 2-4 with three runs scored and a double. Millard went 2-4 with a double and an RBI, while Jim Gilkerson was a perfect 2-2 at the plate.

Southern was slated to play a road game at Missouri S&T on Tuesday, but due to scheduling issues, that game has had to be re-scheduled. No new game date has been decided as of yet. The Lions will be back in action next weekend, with a home series against Central Missouri at Joe Becker Stadium.
