We have handicapped accessible street corners, bathrooms, even restaurants.
but for many families of people with special needs one place has been surprisingly difficult to find a fit -- church.
now as koam's Lisa Olliges shows us in her special report life beyond limits, there's a new drive for disabilities ministry.
music.. Deep and wide deep and wide..
Kaylyn beams with joy.. This is her favorite church song and at thru the roof its not only a sing along but a play along with instruments.
The disabilities ministry is the answer to prayers for her parents who say having a special needs child with cerebral palsy and a list of ailments most people cant pronounce, made going to church a challenge even ..impossible
Kaylyn's mom 3346 thre just wasn't a place no where for her to go we ended up 3350 taking turns walking the halls with her it got to the point 3353 like that's a lot of work to get ready get out in the morning if we're not gonna hear the sermon so we had gotten to the point 3402 where we had given up on trying to take her which is not the way we planned for her to be raised
Matthew southern feels like this is the perfect fit..
Matt.. 5939 I wanna spread the message that thru the roof is for special needs kids its a place where they can have fun talk about god worship god worship Jesus and speak about Jesus 5955 and pray a lot to Jesus and god
while Sunday is praise and worship, on Wednesdays there are focuses on arts, crafts food and more. What makes it possible is lots of trained volunteers so kids like Kaylyn can get the one on one support they need.
heather you have to ask questions especially some people who aren't verbal have to ask parents several time whey do they do this . And what do you do when they do this 5221 so it . It takes humitlity to say I don't have all the answers 5223 but um I know that gods gonna bless this if we just love you the way Jesus would love you 5231 that what we do here.. 5234
and thats where's Jesus..
(possible standup)
Kaylyn's mom knows she's learning at thru the roof but it also gives parents a chance to be apart from their special needs child.. Building independence
ndependence
heather
5007 we have students now that will wave at their mom and dad and say I want you to leave I want to do this by myself that never before 5015 needed their parents to sit by them the whole time
and they're part of a team guided by faith.. Matthew ran at the special Olympics representing thru the roof.. And he has a job at the ministry setting up chairs.
Heather; he has a service he can do for somebody else!!!!!! and these are people that maybe society looks at them and says maybe they don't have much to offer 5037 !!!
5036 so for him to say there's something important its my job and I do it 5041 that's really empowering and changing for him and his parents will say yeah at home he's doing more 5047
I smoked em...(at special Olympics he won).-will this bite make sense??? or do you need to put something like "Matthew took home a gold"
important for his self esteem and his faith.
Matt..
Its really made it stronger 748 it made my relationship stronger with god made my relationship stronger with Jesus praying 756 overt here we got all the answered prayers we got the books of the bible that we do 808..
Every week at thru the roof they each read prayer cards and post them on a list when they're answered.
Wimsett says its another way special needs kids see their purpose.
Heather 4813 one of the things we really want our students to understand is even thought they've heard in their life maybe they can't do things 4821 or that maybe they feel like people don't listen to them we want them to know god listens to them god knows them and they 4830 can make a difference through their prayer
for 22 year old Matthew who claimed the gold, it's a spirit that he can live his life and teaches lessons to those who underestimate what he can do.
342 I would say they were very underestimating need to spend some time with me to know me better 353
for 8 year old Kaylyn, one of the first thru the roof participants.. Its the next best place to home.
