Lions Softball Sweeps Truman State

Updated:

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - Missouri Southern Lions Softball (28-19, 11-7 MIAA) swept Truman State 3-0, and 6-3 in a MIAA twinbill today in Kirksville, Mo.

Game One

The Missouri Southern Lions managed to strike for three runs on nine hits in game 1 of their MIAA double header against Truman, that had been rescheduled three times, for the 3-0 win.

Freshman Madison Reed, sophomore Dawn Grass, and junior Alysha Poteat led the way for Southern with two hits each, and sophomore Jessica Brooks and junior Breanna Volkmann came up with the two RBIs.

The Lions got the first run in the top of the third inning as junior Brianna Fulkerson led off the inning with a double to left field.  Fulkerson then advanced to second on a wild pitch by the Bulldog pitcher and moved to third base by a ground out by Volkmann and then scored on a single to the Truman shortstop by Brooks.  That was all the offense that junior Nicole Reed (21-6) would need as she had another outstanding performance inside the circle as she shut out the Bulldogs and held them to just one hit, a single, struck out 11 Truman batters and gave up zero walks.  The shut out was the ninth on the season for Reed, which puts her just one away from tying former Lions Christi Tidman (1987) and Andrea Clarke (1995) for shut outs in a season at tenth on the Southern single season leaders.

Nicole would get two more insurance runs in the top of the fourth inning as Poteat led off with a single to left field and was advanced to second on a fielder's choice by junior Lydia Niemegeers.  Madison Reed then perfectly placed a bunt for a single moving up both runners and Poteat would scored on a throwing error by the Bulldog first baseman on the play.  Niemegeers advanced to third on the play.  Madison would then steal second followed by a Fulkerson walk and Volkmann would hit a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Niemegeers.

Game Two

Nicole Reed started and won the second game of the double dip today at Truman State moving her record now to 22-6 on the year.  Reed allowed just two Bulldog runs on five hits in four innings of work and struck out two.  Nicole's single season record for strike outs now sits at 196 with four games left in regular season play.  Senior Tiffany Bennett relieved Reed in the fifth inning and pitched three innings allowing a solo Truman run on four hits and struck out two for her first save of the season.

Southern fell behind early as Reed surrendered a lead off home run in the bottom of the first inning but the Lions would tie the game at 1-1 in the top of the third as Fulkerson reached on a single down the left field line and was sacrificed to second by Volkmann and then scored on a single down the right field line by senior Megan Roark.

Southern would then take the lead for good in the visitors frame of the next inning as Niemegeers doubled to right center and advanced to third on a infield single by Madison Reed.  Reed would then steal second, putting runners and second and third with two outs and Fulkerson at the plate.  Fulkerson then lined a single back up the middle to score both Niemegeers and Reed.

The fifth inning saw the Lions add on three insurance runs as they chased the starting Truman pitcher from the game after a lead off double by Brooks.  Brooks advanced to third on a ground out by Roark and then scored on a single up the middle by Grass.  Freshman Brooklyn Farrell would then pinch run for Grass and would take second base on a wild pitch and score on a single down the left field line by junior Brooke Hurley after a walk to Poteat.  Poteat would move to third base on a fielders choice by Niemegeers, that forced out Hurley.  Niemegeers would steal second on the next pitch and Madison Reed would hit a RBI single back to the pitcher to score Poteat.  Bennett would then come into the game for Nicole Reed and pitch the fifth through seventh innings holding the Bulldogs to just one run and four hits.

The Lions will be back in action tomorrow as they take on the Jennies of Central Missouri at 5pm at Lea Kungle Field followed by Senior Day on Saturday against the Southwest Baptist University Bearcats at 2pm.  Seniors Tiffany Bennett, Lauren Hasty, and Megan Roark will be honored at festivities between games.
