New Electronic System Could Save Time And Lives

Updated:
JOPLIN, MISSOURI -

The days of paper records at St. John's Regional Medical Center are now a thing of the past.

St. John's is now live, meaning doctors and nurses can access patient information using an online software.

Staff say they are still learning the new software and it could take around two months before patients see shorter wait times.

Dr. David Hagedon/St. John's Regional Medical Center says, "When you start something new, things are slow at first..and our biggest problem right now is waiting times...but everybody here is learning and learning quickly, and so in the long run it'll be a good thing."

Doctor Hagedorn also says that patients with major ailments will be seen right away.

The new electronic medical records will make it easier for staff to access patient information.

Dr. Joseph Newman says, "Traditionally, medical records involve paper and manila envelopes. When a patient checks in- their chart is pulled from a shelf. St. John's has used this method since 1896."

Doctor Newman says the online system will enable different departments to communicate with one another..and lead to shorter wait times down the road.

Dr. Joseph Newman says, "Over time, when people get used to using the system. And it's been shown in other centers that have transitioned to this new system that they've been able to improve their efficiencies and capabilities of seeing people."

Eventually patients will be able to get their lab test results online, e-mail their doctors and schedule appointments.

When a severely injured person is transported to the ER, staff can access their information by the click of a mouse...saving time when seconds mean the most.

St. John's is part of only 3-percent of hospitals in the country using online records.
