  • Complete Joplin tornado coverage

  • Officially declared a disaster area, temporary morgues are set up throughout the city of Joplin, including on the campus of Missouri Southern. A call out for volunteers who can help in anyway that they can, as schools and other organizations gather supplies to help those in need. More than 20,000 people are without power, residents are asked to boil water, and they're on edge as more storms roll through the area.
  • Difficulties communicating makes it difficult to get an exact count of the number of people unaccounted for. The death toll climbs to 122. An estimated 8,000 structures are damaged over a 1,800 acre area; and, the National Weather Service confirms that it was an EF-5 tornado that went through Joplin. Officials beg "sight-seers" to stay out of the disaster area and an old friend in Joplin covering the tornado aftermath stops by the KOAM station.
  • Hospital officials say they will rebuild. 14,000 are still without electricity, but around 10,000 are in the disaster area. K-9 units search the area as authorities warn tornado victims about scam artists. And washing clothes, charging cell phones and computers becomes one less thing victims have to worry about.
  • A list of 232 people still unaccounted for is released by officials - and the first person listed says "get me off that thing". Desperate to find their loved ones, residents turn to Facebook, Twitter and a radio station group who abandoned their music formats for 24/7 tornado coverage.

People who survived the tornado will always remember it and for Tom Cook, the twister conjures up another memory he would rather forget.

It was three years ago on May 11th that Tom Cook's wife, Terri, of 19 years, died after a tornado destroyed their home near Racine.

There is a tale of survival a week and a half after the twister.

Pat Cole had been walking with her brother-in-law looking at his home when they heard barking, a cry for help.

Pat Cole, found the dog, says, "He said well it sound's like it's hurt so we started looking around and he had to go inside and come back and look through those windows and look down in that hole."
