The Salvation Army tent off 26th and Main in Joplin is offering a service you might not expect as part of the relief effort.
Acupuncture.
In addition to offering basic services, the Salvation Army also has a booth for 'Acupuncturists Without Borders'.
They provide free acupuncture and acupressure to help relieve stress, help people sleep better, and to help with physical or emotional pain.
"We are doing both acupressure and acupuncture to help with specific points with stress relief and trauma relief and help for trauma and intense situations not to settle in the body," says Candage Fruge, an Asian body work therapist with Acupuncturists Without Borders. "The five points that we use have been used by the military and in other extreme situations. They are proven to help relieve stress and trauma and so we felt like whatever we could do to be out here helping others, we wanted and the Salvation Army really embraced us."
They also have massage therapy.
The Salvation Army says the acupuncture service will be provided from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. for as long as the tent is there.
