BLACKHAWKS-BLUES

Blues beat Blackhawks 4-3 in 3 OTs

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Alexander Steen scored at 26 seconds of the third overtime to give the St. Louis Blues a 4-3 victory over the defending Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday night.

Steen beat Corey Crawford off a pair of short passes from Steve Ott and David Backes to cap the longest overtime game in franchise history.

Ryan Miller blanked the Blackhawks after Patrick Kane scored on a breakaway to put Chicago up 3-2 late in the first period.

Both teams face a short turnaround with Game 2 Saturday afternoon.

ROYALS-ASTROS

Shields strikes out 12, Royals sweep Astros 5-1

HOUSTON (AP) - James Shields struck out 12 in eight innings and the Kansas City Royals completed a three-game sweep of the Houston Astros with a 5-1 win on Thursday night.

Shields gave up one run and four hits, all singles. He got back to his winning ways after seeing his nine-game road victory streak snapped in his last start at Minnesota when sloppy defense led to six unearned runs in a 7-1 loss.

Scott Feldman yielded four earned runs and nine hits in six innings. It was the first tough outing for the Astros newcomer after he had allowed just one run and seven hits combined in his first three starts.

CARDINALS-NATIONALS

Wainwright's 2-hitter leads Cards past Nats 8-0

WASHINGTON (AP) - Adam Wainwright threw a two-hitter Thursday night for his seventh career shutout, chipped in at the plate with a double and single, and St. Louis benefited from four errors by Washington in the Cardinals' 8-0 victory.

Wainwright allowed Ian Desmond's infield single in the second inning and Adam LaRoche's single to right in the ninth. He struck out eight and walked three. During one dominant stretch, the runner-up for the 2013 NL Cy Young award retired 18 consecutive batters.

This was the right-hander's 17th complete game and his fourth two-hitter.

Desmond, Washington's shortstop, made a pair of errors, raising his season total to seven. The Nationals have 20 through 16 games, an average of 1.25.

ROYALS MOVES

Kansas City's Cain to DL with groin strain

HOUSTON (AP) - Kansas City outfielder Lorenzo Cain has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a left groin strain.

Cain was injured trying to beat a throw to first base in the ninth inning on Wednesday night. He is hitting .333 with five RBIs and two stolen bases in 12 games this season.

Manager Ned Yost says Cain is: "still sore in his leg so ... we'll give him time to get this out of the way. Hopefully it won't be any more than 15 days, but we'll see."

The team recalled left-hander Justin Marks from Triple-A Omaha on Thursday. Marks went 1-1 with a 3.24 ERA in one start and two relief appearances for the Storm Chasers.

CARDINALS-KELLY

Cardinals put RHP Kelly on DL with hurt hamstring

WASHINGTON (AP) - St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Joe Kelly has been put on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring.

The Cardinals also optioned righty reliever Keith Butler to Triple-A Memphis and recalled rookie right-handers Eric Fornataro and Jorge Rondon from Memphis before Thursday's game at the Washington Nationals. Neither Fornataro nor Rondon has ever appeared in a major league game.

Kelly got hurt while trying to beat out a bunt attempt in the fourth inning of the Cardinals' 5-1 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday. He is 1-1 with a 0.59 ERA in three starts this season.

TULSA-HAITH

Source: Haith front-runner for Tulsa job

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Missouri coach Frank Haith is in position to replace Danny Manning at Tulsa.

A person with knowledge of the situation at Tulsa says Haith is the front-runner for the job, and he was traveling to the school on Thursday afternoon. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because nothing had been finalized.

Haith coached at Miami (Fla.) before taking over at Missouri. He led Missouri to a 30-5 record in 2011-12 and was The Associated Press Coach of the Year. The Tigers went 23-12 this season.

Manning left Tulsa after two seasons to take over at Wake Forest. He coached the Golden Hurricane to the NCAA tournament this season.

KANSAS-COZART

Kansas coach Weis makes Cozart starting QB

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) - Sophomore quarterback Montell Cozart has won the starting job at Kansas, beating out Jake Heaps and T.J. Millweard after a strong spring game.

Cozart was 6 of 10 for 58 yards while running for 70 yards and two touchdowns in a leading his blue team to a 20-10 victory over the white team last Saturday.

Heaps, who lost the starting job to Cozart last season, was just 3 of 9 for 41 yards. Millweard, a transfer from UCLA, was 2 of 8 for 16 yards.

Weis opened the quarterback competition in spring practice, and it was expected to continue into the fall. Instead, he said in a brief statement Thursday that Cozart earned the job.

The Jayhawks open their season Sept. 6 against Southeast Missouri State.
