Friday Late Morning/ Early Afternoon Update June 10th

 Good Day Everyone,

Another unsettled weather pattern will shape up again today as an area of low pressure and a cold front will move through the area later this evening. We will likely see a few storms become severe over the area this evening as well. Here is the current regional radar in motion:

We were already getting a few storms that had re-fired again this morning and continue to see lightning in some of these storms as well. Here is a look at the lightning detection map:

You knew we were not going to end some of this heat without dealing with storms during the transition. A cold front moving through this warm and unstable air mass will set the stage for some big storms again today. Here is the current outlook for severe weather.

 Meteorologist Doug Heady:

Good afternoon everyone.  I hope everyone is doing great and having a great day.  I am sitting here with the boys and trying to get a little work done as well.  I am still having a bit of a hard time with the Joplin tornado aftermath as it has just been a blur for the past 2 and a half weeks.  With the death toll still climbing with hospitalized people still passing away, we know we haven't hit the final number yet.  My heart, thoughts and prayers go out to everyone in this area.  I am still a little torn up by everything that has happened.  But I know it will get better.

Our weather has been very hot and dry for the past week.  It has been a week now that we have had temperatures over 90 degrees and we have set plenty of records in that stretch.  I do think we will see a little relief here soon.  Now don't worry to much about the hot and dry weather right now.  I know the people effected by the tornado don't want to see any rain.  However, everyone else needs rain as it is getting dry outside.  We are still in my 50 day pattern and we will see the weather picking up here soon.  I do think we will catch up on rain over the next couple of weeks as storm systems start affecting us.  Also I think we will see additional severe weather events.  Now by late July and August, we could be in trouble with very hot temperatures and very little rain.  So remember that down the road.  For now lets focus on the next couple of weeks.  Here is a look at the current conditions outside right now.

You can see the temperatures are heating right back up.  Now lets look at the upper levels.

Our ridge of high pressure is now slipping off to the east of the region and storms systems are trying to push into the area.  You can see the center of the high over Kentucky moving away from us.  This is going to allow a cold front to slip in and stall over us later this week.  Let me show you a look of this on Saturday.

This shows our front right on top of the area and producing scattered thunderstorms.  So lets break down this storms system.

Scattered thunderstorms will be possible late Thursday night and early Friday morning.  Some of these could be on the strong side.  Then scattered thunderstorms again late Friday, Friday night and Saturday morning.  We will see a slight risk for some of these to be severe.  Then additional storms will fire up Saturday afternoon and night.  Right now I will put us at a slight to moderate risk for severe storms for that period.  So this is something we want to watch closely.

Down the road I also see another storm system that will affect us mainly next Wednesday and Thursday.  Again I think we will have a severe weather threat with those storms.

Temperatures will cool down a bit this weekend as the front pushes in.  However, the 90s will return early next week as the front lifts back towards the north.

We will see another system from the 19-21st.  I do think this will be a moderate risk for severe weather.  I am off during these days, but will come in to work if severe weather breaks out.  Check below for the updated long range forecast.

Here is a look at your latest 7-day forecast.

Severe threat:  Low(Sunday), Moderate (Wednesday & Thursday)

June (19th-25th):

We will see the storm system over the weekend of the 19th and lasting till about Tuesday.  This will give us pretty good chances for thunderstorms and a severe threat.  Temperatures will be warm with the system but cool down behind it for the middle of the week.  In fact I bet we only have mild temperatures at that time.  Temperatures will warm up a bit later in the week with thunderstorm chances again on Thursday and Friday.

Severe threat:  Moderate (Sunday-Tuesday), Low(Thursday and Friday)

June (26th-July 2nd):

Temperatures should really warm up at the beginning of the week with hot temperatures.  We will see a storm system on Wednesday and Thursday with thunderstorm chances.  The warm temperatures stick around the whole with additional thunderstorm chances over the holiday weekend.

Severe threat:  Low(Wednesday and Thursday, Saturday)Warm temperatures over the holiday weekend with thunderstorm chances through the 4th.  Then just warm to hot temperatures through most of the week with slight chances for thunderstorms by the weekend of the 9th.
