JOPLIN -- Missouri Southern Athletics is pleased to announce the Lions will host an exhibition basketball doubleheader against the Missouri State Bears and Lady Bears on Saturday, November 5. The Lady Bears will face the Lions women at 5pm to be followed by the men's game at approximately 7pm. Both games will be held in the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center on the MSSU Campus in Joplin.
The Lady Bears had to file a waiver with the NCAA to add this exhibition game to their schedule. Similar waivers filed by the Missouri Tigers and Missouri State Bears men's teams were approved, as well. Proceeds from both exhibition dates will be donated by Missouri Southern to support tornado relief efforts for MSSU faculty, staff and students in the wake of the devastating storm that hit the area on May 22.
The Missouri State men's game will feature the return of former Lions assistant coach Paul Lusk who was named as the new Missouri State head coach on April 1. Lusk was on Robert Corn's coaching staff from 1999-2002, helping the Lions' 1999-2000 squad to a school-record 30-3 mark. That Lions team advanced to the NCAA Division II Final Four.
"We appreciate Missouri State reaching out to help our community by playing us," said Lions men's head coach Robert Corn. "Obviously Paul Lusk, having worked for us for three years, has a special bond with Missouri Southern and Joplin. This is a family member helping family and we look forward to the challenge of the game, but more importantly we look forward to continue our efforts of helping our community rebuild from the tragic storm that we have endured."
Southern women's coach Maryann Mitts is also excited about the prospect of host the Division One neighbors.
"On behalf of the entire Joplin community, Missouri Southern State University, and our women's basketball program, I would like to thank Nyla Milleson and Lady Bear basketball for their generosity in helping our community," Mitts said. "We appreciate the compassionate spirit they have shown in assisting their Joplin neighbors continue the rebuilding process. It is an honor to be playing a program with such a rich tradition in women's basketball and look forward to the community benefits associated with the game."
