Lions fall in straight sets at fourth ranked Washburn

TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Missouri Southern volleyball team suffered a 3-0 loss at fourth ranked Washburn tonight as the Lions opened up MIAA play. 

Southern (2-7, 0-1 MIAA) hit just .093 in the match, while Washburn (8-1, 1-0 MIAA) hit .330. Individual set scores were 15-25, 14-25, and 21-25. 

Washburn led for all but one point in the first set, hitting .393 in the opener. The Lions led at 2-1 in the second set, but Washburn went on a 10-3 run to open up an 11-4 lead and eventually went on to win 25-14. 

The Lions led 12-8 in the third set after a kill from Rachel Olinyk and pushed their lead to 16-10 before a 9-3 run by the Lady Blues tied the set at 19 apiece. Washburn ended the set on a 15-5 run to take the match. 

Casey Ball had nine kills and seven digs to lead the Lions. Katie Politte had eight kills, while Sydney Potts had 18 assists and seven digs. 

The Lions will be back in action this Saturday when Southern plays host to Southwest Baptist at 2 pm in Young Gym.
