Oklahoma State coaches and former state senator killed in plane crash

A former Oklahoma state senator and two Oklahoma State women's basketball coaches are killed when their plane crashes in Arkansas.

The two coaches, plus the former senator and his wife were on a recruiting trip Thursday at around 7 p.m. when the single-engine plane crashed in steep terrain near central Arkansas.

Killed in the crash were OSU women's head coach Kurt Budke, assistant coach Miranda Serna, former Oklahoma state senator Olin Branstetter and his wife, Paula.

Both Olin and Paula Branstetter were pilots.  It is unknown who was piloting when the plane went down.

The crash is the second major tragedy for the sports program in about a decade.

In January 2001, 10 men affiliated with the university's men's basketball team died in a Colorado plane crash prompting the university to require that planes used by the school's sports team undergo safety checks before travel.
