JOPLIN -- It was the Jason Adams to Keane Thomann show tonight as Adams had seven assists and Thomann scored 21 points in the first half en route to an 89-43 win for the second ranked Missouri Southern men's basketball team over visiting Truman State tonight.
Southern (7-0, 1-0 MIAA) also tied a school record for fewest points allowed in an MIAA game, matching the 43 points they allowed to Truman at home in 2001 in a 70-43 win. The Lions, however, did break a school record for largest margin of victory in MIAA play with tonight's 46 point advantage bettering the 43 point differential in 2002 over Emporia State.
Thomann led the Lions with a career-high 31 points and eight rebounds on 15-17 shooting from the field. He made his final 13 shots in a row. Stephen Atkinson also had a career-high with 14 points on 6-7 shooting and 2-3 from long range, while Adams had a double-dobule with 10 points and a career-high 10 assists. Patrick Hester scored nine points on 6-6 shooting from the free-throw line. He also added six assists on the night.
Truman (2-6, 0-1 MIAA) was led in scoring by Seth Jackson's 11 points as EJ Hicks added 10 of his own.
The game was tied at eight apiece early on, but the Lions went on a quick 9-0 run to go up 17-8 at the 12:10 mark after a three from Hester. The lead was 16 (29-13) after a layup from Addison with just under eight minutes left in the half. From that point, the Lions closed the half on a 21-8 run and led 50-21 going into the locker room.
Southern's lead grew to as much as 49 (88-39) after a layup from Atkinson with 3:05 left to go in the game.
The Lions' 28 assists were three away from tying the single-game assist record and Adams' ten assists was five off the single-game assist mark. Southern assisted on 28 of its 33 made baskets and only turned the ball over seven times. The Lions forced 25 Bulldog turnovers and scored 34 points off of the miscues. Southern held a 44-18 advantage in the paint as the Lions made 16 of their first 19 shots from close range.
The Lions will be back in action on Saturday afternoon as Southern travels to Central Missouri to take on the Mules at 3:30 pm.
