Man convicted of molesting child in Joplin found dead in his cell

Updated July 18, 2013:  A man convicted in 2011 of molesting a five year old in Joplin has been found dead in his cell.

Jose Benitez, 67, was an inmate at the Jefferson City Correction Center serving a 25 year sentence for first degree statutory sodomy.  On Tuesday authorities found him dead in his cell.

Authorities are investigating.  An autopsy has been scheduled.

 

Reported December 1, 2011:  A jury finds a California man guilty of molesting a five year old child in Joplin in March 2010.

Jose Benitez, 66, is convicted of first degree statutory sodomy.

Sentencing is set for January where the defendant faces a minimum of 10 years in prison.

Benitez also faces similar charges in California.

    Joplin, MO - After missing the last two deadlines, Wallace Bajjali now owns the Coca Cola Building in Joplin. Abbey Title assisted with the sale today. The last deadline missed due to the bank needing an updated appraisal. The Joplin Redevelopment Corporation needed the sale completed to free up funds to buy more land for future projects. All other funds are committed at this point. Wallace Bajjali are in talks about what the site will be used for in the future.More >>
