No. 19 Missouri Southern wins double-overtime thriller with Pitt State

JOPLIN -- Sophomore Marquis Addison took the No. 19 Missouri Southern Lions on his back and scored a career-high 33 points, including 10-11 from the free-throw line, and Southern defeated visiting Pittsburg State, 96-92 in a double-overtime classic at the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center. 

The Lions (19-5, 11-5 MIAA) led by three at the half, and led by as many as six (69-63) after a pair of free throws with 4:55 left in the second half, but Pitt went on a 14-8 run to close out regulation and force overtime. 

Pitt (12-11, 8-8 MIAA) took a three point lead (82-79) in the overtime period after a layup from JaVon McGee with 3:58 left in OT. A pair of layups from Addison and a free-throw from Jordan Talbert left the game tied at 84 a piece with 1:44 left and neither team could convert on its final possessions, forcing the second overtime. 

It was all Southern in the second overtime, however, the Lions went down 86-84 after a pair of free-throws from Andra Bailey, but took a one-point lead (87-86) after a layup from Addison. Southern went up by three (89-86) after a layup from Matt Everson with 2:57 left and a pair of freebies from Addison with 1:42 left pushed the lead to five (91-86). Addison would make four more free throws to seal the victory and he made six of seven in the second overtime period. 

Addison led the Lions with 33 points on 11-16 shooting and 10-11 from the free-throws. He had three assists and four steals, playing 37 minutes, all off the bench. Keane Thomann scored 27 points and added ten rebounds on 13-22 shooting from the field. He played 47 minutes in the game, sitting just three minutes all night. Patrick Hester and Talbert added 10 points each with Talbert pulling down a career-high 12 rebounds and dishing a team-high five assists. 

Pitt had four score in double figures led by 22 points from Eric Ray. Bailey had 10 points and 12 rebounds, while McGee scored 18 points and added nine rebounds. 

The Lions out rebounded Pitt 46-41 and shot 51 percent from the field. 

Southern will be back in action this Saturday when the Lions travel to Emporia State.
