Softball Lions Drop 2 in Day 1 of ACU's Whitten Inn Classic

ABILENE, TEXAS - The Missouri Southern Lions (0-2) dropped a pair of games in day one of the Abilene Christian University's Whitten Inn Classic falling 14-8, and 1-0 to Texas Woman's University.

Game One

The streak for Texas Woman's University continued in the first game of the Abilene Christian University's Whitten Inn Classic Friday afternoon, the Pioneers capitalized on four errors by Southern to secure a 14-8 victory.  The win was the sixth straight in the series between Southern and the Pioneers.

Senior Breanna Volkmann went 3-for-5 from the plate with one run scored while fellow senior Brooke Hurley finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored, sophomore Shelby Romines went 2-for-4 with a run scored, and freshman Brooke Swadley also finished 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Sophomore Haley Pypes (0-1) started the game for the Lions walking the first three batters, junior Kayce Moore then came in relief and pitched three and a third allowing four hits and five runs (three earned).  Sophomore Arlissa Arwood saw action in two and a third innings allowing just two earned runs with Romines and sophomore Chasity Henson combining for the final inning and two thirds allowing four runs.

Game Two

The Lions could only gather three hits in game two of the double header with Texas Woman's and the Pioneers struck for one run in the fifth inning for the go ahead run.

Southern's three hits would come from Volkmann, Pypes, and Hurley.

Junior Hannah Cooke (0-1) got the start for the Lions and went the distance pitching six innings and allowing one run on four hits.  Cooke walked five Pioneers while striking out one.

Southern will be back in action tomorrow as they play East Central and host Abilene Christian at 10am and 12pm, respectively.  Game times could be pushed back due to cold weather, stay tuned to www.mssulions.com for game time updates.
