A landmark at a Pittsburg, Kansas park has now been removed.
Steam Engine 1023 had rested at Schlanger Park since the 1950's. But today, with a police escort, the engine made the journey on a flatbed trailer today to Carona Depot and Museum just west of Scammon.
The museum in Corona houses is operated by Heart of the Heartlands Railroad Club and has several train engines, cars, and stations from as far back as the 1860's.
Pittsburg commissioners had decided the city would not be able to afford to maintain the engine. Repairing the exterior is estimated to cost around $25,000, and maintenance would be needed every three to five years.
