Updated 1:15 PM: Parts of South Main Street are still closed to traffic in downtown Joplin and smoke continues to come smoldering wood inside the building.
Firefighters were dispatched to 906 South Main just after 10:00 last night. It was the Raines Brothers building, which was on the National Historic Register as a hotel for the Joplin Depot.
Joplin Emergency Manager Keith Stammer says the structure was vacant when crews arrived. We are being told a homeless person was pulled out of the building before the fire. We don't know if that person had any connection to the fire.
Thirty firefighters from Joplin and Redings Mill worked the fire. Crews spent more than two hours battling the inferno.
Again, firefighters are still investigating the incident.
Firefighters still have to go through the building to make sure no one else was inside.
Updated 1:40 AM: Crews spent more than two hours battling the inferno. Fire officials tell us they will be tearing down the front wall this morning to get a better look at the building.
There is still no word on what caused the fire.
The owner of The Pub neighboring the building says it has been vacant for several years.
Updated March 2, 12:25 AM: Fox 14's Mike Olmstead reports the fire is mostly out but fire fighters continue to pour water on it.
Olmstead says officials initially received the call on the fire at 10:02 p.m.
The building at 906 South Main is now called the Rains Brothers Building and is owned by Mark Williams.
Updated 11:55 PM: Fox 14's Mike Olmstead says they've been told by officials that the building is an old hotel used by the Joplin Depot "decades ago". When the train would come through this hotel catered to those who did not have a lot of money.
It is a three story building part of the Carl Adams block. Carl Adams Hotel Joplin Missouri
Updated 11:50 PM: Reporter Zach Fletcher says fire crews continue to put water on the "Carl Adams" building. He says crews arrived nearly two hours ago.
Updated 11:40 PM: Emergency Manager Keith Stammer tells reporter Zach Fletcher that about 30 fire fighters have responded to the scene of the fire at 9th and Main. It took fire fighters about three minutes to respond to the call.
Stammer says the building was an old motel, that was on the historical record.
Posted March 1, 11:14 PM: A large fire is burning in the area of 9th and Main Street in downtown Joplin.
It appears to be in the area of an abandoned building near a business called "The Pub". That business has been evacuated and we have no reports of injuries.
