Lions Softball Drops Pair to Lady Lions, 3-1 and 5-4

ST. CHARLES, Mo. – The Missouri Southern Lions (12-21, 4-2 MIAA) dropped a pair of game to future MIAA opponent Lindenwood University, 3-1 and 5-4, Saturday afternoon at the Lou Brock Sports Complex.

Game One

Lindenwood got off to an early lead striking for a two run home run in the home half of the first inning.  The Lions would cut the lead to 2-1 in fifth inning as senior Breanna Volkmann walked, stole second, and scored on a single by fellow senior Brianna Fulkerson.  Lindenwood would add another run in the home half of the fifth to provide the final score of 3-1.

Sophomore Haley Pypes (7-4) got the start for the Lions and would go the distance giving up three runs, all earned, on five hits while striking out seven.

Game Two

Saw the Lady Lions jump out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom half of the second inning before Southern would answer with four runs in the visitor's half of the fourth.  Sophomore Shelby Romines doubled in fellow sophomore Brooklyn Farrell, and then senior Alysha Poteat connected for a three run home run, her second home run of the season.

Junior Kayce Moore (2-7) got the start for the Lions and would suffer the loss giving up five runs, four earned, on six hits in 6 1/3 innings of work.  The LU Lady Lions would push across the winning run with one out in the bottom of the seventh.

On The Day

Pypes went 2-for-5 on the day to lead the Lions at the plate, while Poteat's three RBIs led the Lions on the day in that category.

Up Next

The Lions will head to Jefferson City Sunday afternoon to resume MIAA play as they take on the Blue Tigers of Lincoln University at 2pm.
