Lions drop a pair of tough contests at No. 10 Central Missouri

Updated:

WARRENSBURG, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern baseball team dropped a pair games today at No. 10 Central Missouri, falling 5-1 in the opener and losing 3-2 on a walk-off single in game two.

Southern (19-10, 12-9 MIAA) had a pair of solid pitching performances in both games as senior Ryan Wheat suffered the loss in game one, but allowed just two earned runs on five hits, while striking out three. In game two, David Reese went five innings, giving up one earned run and striking out two.

The Mules (22-5, 17-4) scored five runs in the first five innings of game one to put away the opener. In game two, the Mules scored two runs in the sixth to temporarily go up 2-1 and after the Lions tied it in the top of the seventh, UCM scored the winning run in the bottom half of the inning.

Southern scored its lone run of game one in the sixth on an RBI single from Sam Ryan, scoring Cullen Baxter. Ryan and Thomas Wilson went 2-3 in the game, while Baxter and Michael McCoy had a hit each.

Ryan knocked out his second home run of the season in the second inning of game two to get the Lions on the board first.

That score would hold until the bottom of the sixth when the Mules plated two runs to go up 2-1. The Lions would get the run back in the top of the seventh when Luke Acosta singled to start the inning. He moved to second on a sac bunt and went to third on a ground out. Acosta then showed off his spead and scored on a wild pitch.

Central used a lead off triple from Jordan Coons in the bottom of the seventh and he scored on a John Oropeza single to win the game.

Ryan led the offensive attack for the Lions with a home run. Five other Lions had a hit each with Acosta scoring a run.

The Lions and Mules will be back at it tomorrow with the finale of the series starting at noon.
