Southern baseball drops a pair at Washburn

Updated:

TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Missouri Southern baseball team dropped a pair of games today at Washburn University, falling 3-0 in game one and 12-5 in game two.

The Lions (19-13, 12-12 MIAA) saw themselves in a pitching duel in the opener as Washburn (15-12, 11-9 MIAA) starter Brett Ash and Lions' starter Cody Griebling went toe-to-toe and the duo both threw complete games and finished the contest in 57 minutes.

The only scoring in the opener came in the sixth when the Ichabods plated three runs in the inning. Griebling allowed just those three runs on five hits, while striking out one and walking one.

Jesse Kinzey, Harrison Gerber and MJ Sartin all had a hit each in the game.

In game two, Washburn scored eight runs over the first three innings to put the game away. Southern had a run in each of the first and third innings, as well as three in the seventh.

Kinzey singled home Luke Acosta who had doubled to start the game for Southern's first run in the opening inning. The Lions then added another in the third when Michael McCoy singled home Acosta, who had doubled again to start the inning.

Kinzey tripled to start the seventh for the Lions and scored after Jim Gilkerson reached on an error. Gilkerson scored on a sac fly from Sartin, and Will Wagner scored on an RBI double from Tee Helsel.

Ryan Wheat started for the Lions and went two and two thirds of an inning. Ryan Taylor threw three innings of relief, while Michael Mudd threw the final two and a third.

Kinzey went 3-4 in the game with a run and an RBI, while Acosta had two hits and two runs scored. McCoy had a pair of hits and an RBI, while five other Lions had a hit each.

The two teams will be back at it tomorrow with a double-header at noon.
