Rural electric company pays customers to save energy

The Heartland Rural Electric Cooperative is trying to get customers to save energy and in turn get paid.

The Peak Savers Program will be in the months of July and August from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. and customers who enroll in the program will be paid $1 for every kilowatt-hour saved.

While 200 households were in the pilot program last year, more than 1,000 customers are anticipated to participate this year.

"We're going to be able to send them alert notices the day before," says Ron Graber, member services for Heartland.  "At about five o'clock in the evening they're going to be receiving notices, text messages on their phone, e-mails, even some phone calls if we need to depending on what their technology available is."
