Lions Softball End Season at Ft. Hays State

HAYS, Kan. – The Missouri Southern Lions (16-35, 5-15 MIAA) ended their season as they were swept by the Fort Hays State University Tigers (29-17, 13-7 MIAA) 1-0 and 8-3 Sunday afternoon at Tiger Softball Field in Hays, Kansas.

Game One

The Lions managed just one hit off the FHSU starter, Maddie Holub, as senior Brianna Fulkerson singled up the middle off Holub's left leg.

Sophomore Haley Pypes (10-10) got the start for Southern and allowed one run on six hits with four strike outs.

Game Two

The Tigers struck first in game two scoring two runs in the home half of the first inning before the Lions would strike for two in the third as sophomore Brooklyn Farrelldoubled to right followed by a single by senior Brianna Fulkerson, while seniorBreanna Volkmann walked to load the bases with one out.  Senior Brooke Hurleyconnected for a single over the third baseman's head to score both Farrell and Fulkerson to tie the game at 2-2.

FHSU would take the lead the very next half inning as starting pitcher Maddie Holub hit a solo homerun over the left field wall.  Southern would tie the game again in the visitor's half of the fourth as freshman Brooke Swadley singled home senior Alysha Poteat.

The Tigers would take the lead again in the bottom of the fourth frame as Ft. Hays plated two runs with two outs to take a 5-3 lead and then plate three runs in the fifth to make it an 8-3 game.

Junior Hannah Cooke (3-12) got the start for the Lions going 3 2/3 innings allowing seven runs, five earned, on seven hits with two strikeouts.  Sophomore Arlisa Arwood came in relief and pitched 2 1/3 innings allowing one run on four hits with one strikeout.

On The Day

Fulkerson would lead Southern on the day going 3-for-7 at the plate and Hurley would finish the day with two RBIs.
