Lions Hoops add two for 2012-13

Updated:

JOPLIN -- Missouri Southern head basketball coach Robert Corn has announced the signing of Wendell Pelts and RJ Leverette to national letters of intent to attend Southern and play basketball beginning this fall.

Pelts, a 6-5 swingman from Madison, Wisc., comes to Southern after playing two years at Iowa Lakes Community College. Last season at Iowa Lakes, he played in 29 games, where he averaged 10.9 points, 6.4 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game, while adding 1.0 steals per game. He also shot 43 percent from the floor and 39 percent from long range. He was named a first-team All-Region pick.

A 2006 grad of Madison Memorial High School, Pelts played football in high school. The son of Pierre Washington and Mary Pelts, Wendell will major in dental hygiene at Southern.

"We are pleased to add Wendell to our basketball program," Corn said. "We like his versatility in that he can play on the perimeter or with his back to the basket.  He has a chance to become a very good defender and we expect him to bring some maturity to our program.  Wendell is a good addition to our program."

Leverette is a 6-0 guard from Kansas City, and he comes to Southern after one year at Sheridan College in Wyoming. Last season as a freshman, Leverette played in 22 games for Sheridan, averaging 9.7 points, 3.1 rebounds and 3.2 assists.

Prior to Sheridan, Leverette played at Grandview High School in Kansas City, where he helped his team to the State Championship game his senior season. That year, he averaged 19.2 points, 6.3 assists, 3.2 rebounds and 2.9 steals. He was an All-Conference, All-District, All-State pick, while being named his conference Player of the Year. He also was part of the most successful senior classes at Grandview as they won 81 varsity games as a group.

The son of Robert and Michelle Emery, RJ is undecided on his major at Southern.

"We recruited RJ out of high school so we are really pleased with his decision to come to Missouri Southern," Corn said. "He is the point guard we wanted.  He has good quickness and the ability to get by defenders and make good decisions.  He will have a very good career for us at Missouri Southern."
