Joplin High prepares for first play since tornado

Updated:

Joplin High School prepares for its first musical, "Seussical", with this years new theatre director in a new-old space.

When the May 22 tornado took away the high school it took away years of props and costumes that had accumulated at the high school theatre department.

Now plays are performed in a space with a long theatre history.

The Memorial High School Theatre comes to life again with students preparing for "Seussical", the musical, but this old theatre built in 1917 has some new tools to make the performance shine.  An entire lighting system with control board and wiring was donated through grants from Sight and Sound Theatre in Branson.

For senior actors the space is much smaller than the destroyed high school but they and the director say the old theatre has a lot to offer.

"I love this theater," says JHS Theatre Director Sarah Brim.  "It has an old charm to it that new  theatres just don't have anymore.  Every seat is really close to the stage.  It has wonderful sound.  It's built like an old opera house.  It's just fantastic, especially for a musical with all the sound opportunities.  Music just comes alive in here.  It's just spectacular."

Now with an orchestra, students will still have some microphones to use but students agree the theatre has an intimacy they didn't get to experience before, and all feel it's great to bring this gem of a theatre back into use.

The performances begin Thursday night at 7.  Ticket info is available at jhs.joplinschools.org.
