Visitors to Joplin will soon have an easier way to move around on foot. Sidewalks will be built along Range Line road at 36th Street.
The project is near Sam's Club and in the city's hotel district.
When construction starts drivers can expect a night time lane closure on Range Line Road and 36th Street. Crews will close lanes as early as 7 p.m. and have them reopened by 6 a.m. each day.
However, one lane in each direction will remain open at all times during the construction.
The Missouri Department of Transportation says the project has been planned for a while.
"We've been trying to get this done for the last three or four years now," says Sean Matlock of MoDOT. "We've been working with the local businesses and we were trying to do it without trying to acquire more right of way, which it was pretty difficult to do. But we were able to do that."
The sidewalk project will cost about $378,000 and is slated to be completed by the end of August.
