Joplin pools will be ready for the Memorial Day Weekend, the holiday that kicks off summer swimming.
It's exciting when any of the pools open but this year Cunningham Park pool is new and improved.
After the bathhouse and pool equipment was destroyed by the tornado, donations and city dollars are bringing it back better than ever.
Lifeguards are hard at work doing final vacuuming of all the pools to make sure they're spotless for opening day. City workers are checking fittings and all motor equipment too. Other lifeguards scrub the pool deck, scrub platforms of new slides and even wax the inside of slides so swimmers get a smooth ride.
The new additions at the deep end will require more vigilance for the lifeguards.
"Especially with little kids not paying attention, they tend to get piled up on the bottom of slides," says aquatic supervisor Jake Guernsey. "Our lifeguards will have to be making sure that area stays clear."
All three Joplin pools - Cunningham, Ewert and Schifferdecker, open Saturday at 1 p.m.
After this holiday weekend Schifferdecker pool will close on Monday's but the other aquatic centers will be open seven days a week.
Guernsey suggests you come early on opening day. He expects a capacity crowd right off the bat.
