New sales tax takes effect in Delaware County

Updated:

Expect to pay more if you visit the Grand Lake area over the 4th of July holiday.

Starting this week a new sales tax increase is in effect for residents and visitors in Delaware County, Oklahoma.

The increase comes after a $13 million lawsuit against the county stemming from alleged incidents at the Delaware County jail.

Voters chose to hike up the sales tax for the next 17 years rather than face an 18% property tax increase.

The sales tax increase in Delaware County does vary according to location.

For stores inside the Grand Lake community the sales tax is 9.3%; in Jay the sales tax is now 8.9%; and, outside of city limits it is 5.9%.
