A voter watchdog group says Cherokee County, Kansas might have violated federal law. The group claims the county had ineligible voters listed on its rolls.
Cherokee County Clerk Crystal Gatewood agrees there were problems with a number of voters listed on the roll before her election as county clerk in 2009.
But Gatewood says since that time she's been trying to confirm that all listed voters are alive and still living in Cherokee County.
Gatewood says she's maintaining the voter list every month.
The watchdog group True The Vote hopes Cherokee County continues its efforts.
"They're violating Section 8 of the Voter Registration Act, which says they must be maintaining the lists," says Logan Churchwell of True The Vote. "When that's not happening, and we're seeing much further than 100%voter registration, that's where we have a violation of federal law and you're only harming the faith that Americans have in their election system."
