Fire southwest of Columbus, Kansas

Emergency crews are fighting a fire at 50th and Union Chappel about five miles west of Columbus, Kansas.

The fire is in a line of trees so crews from Columbus, Baxter Springs and Chetopa are attempting to backfire the line, meaning crews burn a field ahead of the fire to prevent it from spreading.

The fire is to far in the trees for crews to be able to put it out and say it could burn for a while.

At this time officials do not know how the fire started.
