Explosive device found in vehicle involved in Independence crash

Authorities recovered an explosive device from a car today in Independence, Kansas.

Officers were called to a disturbance in a residential area on South 13th Street where they found a car badly damaged in a motor vehicle accident in an alley.  Authorities found an explosive device inside the vehicle.

The car was taken to another area where a Kansas Highway Patrol bomb squad used a robot to make the device safe.

Police arrested the owner of the vehicle at his mother's home in Independence.

Charges against Robert Clarenson, 30, include criminal use of explosives.
