The transformation of a highway between Kansas City and Joplin is almost complete.
The 180 mile stretch of U.S. Highway 71 between the two communities will officially be designated an interstate at noon, on December 12.
The highway is already a divided highway with a 70 mile per hour speed limit.
But before the road can be designated an interstate all intersections with crossroads must be eliminated. Construction is progressing to replace many of those with over-passes and interchanges.
The state hopes to complete all the construction work by November.
