High winds flip trailer on I-44, killing driver

Updated at 11:25 PM CST:  The Oklahoma Highway Patrol says straight-line winds flipped a semi on Interstate 44 near Miami, Oklahoma, and the driver died from his injuries in the crash.

OHP says Jimmy Carl King, 70, of Ash Grove was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Straight-line winds caught the semi's trailer," OHP says in a statement.  "The trailer flipped on its side onto the cement barrier wall causing the cab to hit the cement barrier wall, flipping it onto the drives side pinning the driver."

Updated at 7:00 PM CST:  Multiple football games are confirmed to have been postponed due to today's storms:

  • Ash Grove at Diamond moved to Saturday at 12 p.m.
  • Carl Junction at East Newton moved to Saturday at 1 p.m.
  • Quapaw at Fairland moved to Saturday at 12 p.m.
  • McAuley at Miller moved to Monday at 7 p.m.
  • Fredonia at Northeast football moved to Monday at 7 p.m.
  • Neosho at Willard moved to Saturday at 2 p.m.
Games that are still on for tonight but with changes:
  • Seneca at Aurora - start delayed until 8 p.m.
  • Webb City at Carthage - start delayed until 8 p.m.
  • Labette County at Chanute - start delayed until 7:30 p.m.
  • Hillcrest at Joplin - start delayed until 7:05 p.m.
  • Claremore at Miami - start delayed until 8:30 p.m.
  • Adair at Wyandotte - game being moved to Adair, time TBD
Also, Outlaw Nationals Truck & Tractor Pull has been canceled in Miami, Oklahoma for Friday night.  However, those tickets will be honored at Saturday's show.

Reported September 7 at 5:13 PM CST:  Severe storms have been rumbling throughout the Four States this afternoon.  Thousands are without power and there are many reports of damage throughout the area.

A semi was flipped on its side about a mile east of the Miami, Oklahoma exit on I-44.

Flash flooding has also been reported in several areas.

As of 4:30 p.m. Heartland Rural Electric was reporting more than 2,300 outages throughout Southeast Kansas.

As of 5:00 p.m., Westar Energy was reporting another  5,300 outages throughout Southeast Kansas.

Empire District Electric is reporting more than 3,000 outages throughout Northeast Oklahoma and more than 7,800 outages throughout Southwest Missouri.
