As the 46th annual Maple Leaf Festival kicks off in Carthage Missouri, as residents get out their family quilts. Some show themes of Jasper county's historic buildings, others show colorful patterns. The Powers Museum opens its quilt show for residents to view.
Director of the museum, Michele Hansford says quilts tell stories and bring families together, a reason why the community has been celebrating the festival for the last 46 years.
"It was such a boom to the community and brings people together, a lot of classes have their reunions and they said well why don't we just repeat this and vuala we've had the maple leaf festival that's gone on now for forty six years, so it is a big time to remember the heritage of the community as well as your family and friends" says Hansford.
