Ribbon cutting at Empire's substation at 26th and Moffett

Updated:

Empire District Electric Company held a ribbon cutting and dedication in Joplin Wednesday for their newly completed substation on 26th and Moffet.  The original facility was destroyed in last years tornado.

On Wednesday the pastor of the Saint Mary's church which gave up their land in order for the new substation to be built conducted a prayer at the event.

The old substation was built in 1927 and officials say the new technology on this substation will allow for faster fixes to power outages.

"It does improve our response time," says David Boren of Empire Electric.  "It also helps us with the capacity back in this area, to meet the needs as our customers build back."

The new substation can service up to 4,500 customers.
