Brandon Williams sets sack record, but Lions fall to Northwest

Updated:

JOPLIN -- Missouri Southern senior defensive lineman Brandon Williams set the MSSU all-time sack record today, but the Lions fell at home, 38-14 to fifth ranked Northwest Missouri at Fred G. Hughes Stadium.

Southern (5-3, 4-3 MIAA) had 253 yards on the ground today, but could get just five yards in the air.

Northwest (7-1, 6-1 MIAA) had 154 yards on the ground and 292 yards through the air and held the ball for nearly 35 minutes to the Lions' 25.

The Bearcats scored the games' first two touchdowns as James Franklin and Jordan Simmons both took the ball in for short scores.

Kellen Cox got the Lions on the board as he capped off a nine play, 58-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run. Northwest would add a three-yard touchdown pass from Trevor Adams to Joel Gantz, as well as a 22-yard field goal from Todd Adolf to make the halftime score 24-7.

Neither team scored in the third quarter, but Franklin added two more rushing touchdowns in the fourth to put the game away. Freshman Ken Armant added a 51-yard touchdown run, the first of his career, to make the final tally, 38-14.

The Lions had 11 different players rush the ball today, with Ne'Ronte Threatt coming up with 56 yards on four carries. Armant had a carry for 51 yards and a score, while Cox added another rushing touchdown of his own.

Defensively, Brian Rodgers led the team with 11 tackles, while Alex Wong had 11 of his own, to go with a forced fumble. Williamd had five stops, two quarterback hurries, and a sack. The sack gives him 24 in his career, tops now on the MSSU all-time list.

Southern will be back at it next weekend, travelling to Lindenwood for a 2:37 pm start. The game will be televised as the MIAA TV Game of the Week.
