
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Pittsburg State Women's Basketball team was picked to finish second in the MIAA by both the MIAA coaches and media members from around the league in the 2012-13 MIAA Preseason Polls.
The Gorillas return four of their five regular starters from last season and three additional players that saw significant minutes during the 2011-12 season that saw the team advance to the Elite Eight. The Gorillas received 178 points, including six first place votes in the Coaches Poll and 254 points, including eight first place votes, in the Media Poll.
Pitt State was picked to finish behind only Washburn, who took both the regualr season and MIAA Tournament titles in 2012. The Lady Blues garnered 11 more points than the Gorillas in the Coaches Poll (189) and only three more in the Media Poll (257). The only other team receiving first place votes was Emporia State who was picked to finish third in both polls with one first place vote and 171 points from the coaches and two first place votes and 235 points from the media.
The next three teams are identical in both polls with Northeastern State, Fort Hays State and Central Missouri picked fourth, fifth and sixth. Both polls also finish with Northwest Missouri and Nebraska-Kearney in 14th and 15th.
The middle of the Coaches Poll has Truman in seventh, followe dby Central Oklahoma. Lincoln and MIssouri Southern are tied for ninth, followed nu MIssouri Western. Lindenwood and Southwest Baptist are tied for 12th. The media poll varies slightly with Central Oklahoma picked seventh, followed by Truman, Lindenwood, Southwest Baptist, Lincoln, Missouri Western and MIssouri Southern.
Pitt State will travel to LIncoln, Nebraska on Monday, October 29 for its annual exhibition game with the Huskers. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. The regular season opens with the Pitt State Tipoff Classic on November 9 and 10 against Southwest Minnesota State and Mary. Games are set for 3 p.m. each day in the newly remodeled John Lance Arena.
