Hundreds of teachers gather to discuss math at PSU

Hundreds of teachers from across Kansas converge at the Pittsburg State University campus to discuss math standards for students.

A major emphasis for the conference was the common core standards for mathematics, which defines the knowledge and skills students should have within their kindergarten through 12th grade education so they'll be able to succeed in college.

"The main thing this time is of course the common course state standard for mathematics, so there are a lot of sessions about that," says Karla Childs, an associate professor at Pittsburg State.  "Our keynote speaker spoke about the common course state standard and we have some afternoon sessions that are targeted sessions by grade levels."

Another topic of discussion was Mayan mathematics.
