Statement from Jenifer Bingham, Mayor, City of Baxter Springs
I was elected to improve the city Government in Baxter Springs. Some progress has been made but there is still work to be done.
A group of interested citizens has filed a successful petition to have a recall election. If the councilmen are recalled, we will be able to make important improvements to city government.
Personally, I hope the recall is successful but will leave that to the good residents of Baxter Springs.
I believe there were violations of the Kansas Open Meetings Act by certain councilmen. I have given all evidence, including photos, to law enforcement and I understand it is being investigated by the Attorney General.
I believe all allegations against me by Galena Attorney Kevin Cure are unfounded. He continues to threaten legal action. I will, of course defend any such action.
I continue to believe that it is not appropriate for certain councilmen to hire attorney Kevin Cure at the City's expense. We have a very capable city attorney - appointed in accordance with Kansas statutes. The good citizens of Baxter Springs will deal with this in the recall on Thursday.
Jenifer Bingham, Mayor
