Pittsburg State students shine light on the often hidden issue of dating violence. More than fifty students walked across campus holding signs that read "Stop dating violence" and "consent is sexy", all to raise awareness about the issue.
Before the walk, a presentation about dating violence was conducted by the Director of Victims Services in the Kansas Attorney Generals office.
Research shows that 60% of acquaintance rapes on college campuses occur in casual or steady dating relationships. Natalie Rhoton and Julie Lienard, both seniors in the social work program, organized the event. They say after learning the high number of dating violence offences involving teens and young adults, it was important to get the word out around campus so the problem can stop.
