MSSU women's basketball falls 78-61 to Mary at PSU Tip Off Classic

PITTSBURG – The Missouri Southern women's basketball team fell to the University of Mary (ND) 78-61 this afternoon in the first game of the Pittsburg State Tip Off Classic.

The Lions were led by a double-double performance from junior center Shonte Clay who finished the game with 12 points and 10 rebounds. The Lions also got a nice performance out of sophomore guard Nicole Hartzog, who finished with nine points in her Southern debut.

Mary was led by 24 points and 11 rebounds from forward Shaunna Knife. She finished the day 8-13 from the field and 5-7 from three-point range.

With Mary getting off to a 10-0 start, the Lions' cut the lead in half thanks to junior guard Jolee Sharp's five points. With Mary extending the lead to 25-13, a Clay layup and a three-pointer by freshman guard Kori Dodson cut the lead to 25-18 with just under six minutes to play in the first half. A 10-2 run by the Marauders, that included a pair of three's by UM's Laura Petersen, made the score 35-20. Finishing the half on a 6-2 run, the Lions cut the game to 37-26 at half.

With the game staying a 11-point game the first six and half minutes of the second half, a Dominique Mosley layup made the game 48-37. Unfortunately, that was as close as the Lions would get the rest of the game as the Marauders went on a 17-6 run over the next three and half minutes to make the game 65-44 with 7:41 remaining.

Southern shot 34.5 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from three-point range in the game, but the Lions were done in by the Marauder's hot shooting from three point range as they finished the game hitting 11-of-23 three pointers, good for 47.8  percent.

The Lions will return to John Lance Arena tomorrow to play Southwest Minnesota State  at 1 p.m.
