Four State schools host Veterans Day activities

Updated:

Joplin's Eastmorland and Kelsey Norman Elementary Schools today hosted Veterans Day assemblies and activities.

The fourth and fifth grade choir put on a musical presentation and the winners of the Veterans Day essay contest read their essays to the audience and were honored.

A special guest, Captain Marshall Hogue of the U.S. Army Reserves, spoke to students.

"I think the assembly really helps them kind of understand where Veteran's Day came from and then also kind of just have a better appreciation for the veterans in their lives," says Captain Hogue.

One of the essay winners father is awaiting deployment but was able to watch his daughter read her essay at the assembly via Skype.

Galena High School also honored veterans today.  The school hosted it's 15th annual Veterans Day celebration.

The choir and band performed for the area veterans.  A slide show was also presented and students displayed posters they made for the veterans as part of a contest.

School officials say it's a great program.

"This is a great opportunity for our kids," says Toby Vancleave, the Galena 6-12 principal.  "We have done this for many years now.  We see a lot of graduates come back as veterans to our program, - one of our speakers alluded to the fact he was part of our program 15 years ago as a senior and he was able to come back now as our keynote speaker which is a great opportunity for us and him as well."
