Joplin Schools officially receives 12 acres from Mercy Hospital

The Joplin School District today officially receives 12 acres donated by Mercy Hospital.

Groundwork on the acreage near the site of the old hospital has already started for the new Irving Elementary school.

The campus will be home to 600 students from kindergarten through fifth grade.

The district plans to have the school completed by December of next year.

The Stained Glass Theatre is also building back and the Joplin Museum might also have a location in that area.  A garden on the site is also planned in honor of the old hospital.

School officials say they greatly appreciate the donation.

"It is really hard to find property in Joplin," says Superintendent C.J. Huff.  "Acreage and green space you need for a nice size elementary and this will be great asset to this community."

The property covers a total of 50 acres with Mercy keeping nine of those acres.

The rest will be divided among the school district, Stained Glass Theatre, and the city of Joplin.

The land is valued at more than $1 million.
