JOPLIN -- Marquis Addison scored 23 and Jordan Talbert added 22 as the Missouri Southern basketball team defeated visiting John Brown 83-63 tonight in the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.

Southern (1-0) opened the game on a 21-4 run, capped off by a free-throw from Stephen Atkinson. The Lions' lead reached 17 three more times in the half, the last on a bucket from Addison that gave the Lions a 37-20 lead going into the locker room.

John Brown (4-1) fell behind by 31 (55-24) after a dunk by Marquis Addison at the 13:34 mark of the second half. The Southern lead reached 32 after a three from Atkinson with 12:20 left, but over the next seven minutes, JBU clawed their way back to within 19 (68-49) after a three from D'Shon Taylor.

The Golden Eagles got to within 18 twice, the second after a layup from Coleston Rakestraw with 31 seconds to go, but a bucket from Blaine Miller with 12 seconds left provided the final points of the night for either team.

Talbert went 6-17 from the field and 9-10 from the free throw line, and added 12 rebounds for a double-double. Addison was 10-16 from the field and 2-3 from the line as he added seven rebounds and four assists, to go with five steals.
